For those of you still struggling with you old slow ADSL Modem/Router – Check out this behemoth
ASUS announce their new RT – AC3200 Tri-band Wireless Gigabit Router.
With a range of over a whopping 50 mtrs and a total of 3 separate access points ( 1 x 2.4 GHz and 2 x 5GHz )
This will resolve all your issues of lagging internet when Johnny is gaming in his room, Mum is downloading a recipe on her tablet and Dad is streaming a movie all at the same time....
Speeds of up to 600 Mbps and 240 Mbps were achieved at a distance of 5 metres on the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands respectively. The amazing thing though, is when you blew that out to a distance of 30 mtrs, we were still getting 220 Mbps / 65 Mbps. That’s faster than ISP connections run in this country. It’s also interesting to note that connecting multiple devices, ( 9 in our test ), had little effect on the speed.
This thing is also HUGE with a total of 6 antennas protruding like a giant insect, It’s not very pretty.
I really liked the slick user interface though with a pleathora of features that most people probably won’t use, but still nice to have the options anyhow. I particularly liked AiProtection which can halt viruses at the router before they even get a chance to infect machines on the network. The router boasts a dual core 1 GHz CPU, 256 MB DDR3 RAM and 128 GB of flash storage, which is more than some basic servers. This makes it probably the most powerful router on the market at the time of print.
There are 2 x USB ports which are always handy for sharing printers, USB drives etc. Realistically though, this device is more than likely aimed at commercial applications, such as offices or WIFI hotspot applications in cafes, bars etc. At around $320.00 AU, it’s a bit steep, but I for one hope I get to keep the unit sent to us for testing.. :)
